Brittle diabetes is frequently hospitalized, misses work and often has to contend with psychological problems. All of these factors place additional emotional and financial stress on family members. Less than 1 of people who have insulin-dependent diabetes patients experience this brittle diabetes. However, those who do are often troubled by frequent medical problems and hospital admissions. People with type 1 diabetes may develop the brittle diabetes.

The term brittle diabetes treatment is not often heard although we still know it as the roller coaster swings of the blood glucose level. Although now rare, the few with type 1 diabetes have to live with this condition. While brittle diabetes and so its treatment is sometimes not attended to except for hypoglycemia, some people’s bodies have exaggerated reaction to food, exercise, insulin and stress no matter how consistent they are in their effort to stabilize the blood glucose level so let us do some detective work.

The brittle diabetes is caused primarily by physical, rather than psychological, factors may benefit from a continuous insulin pump to control glucose levels precisely. Selected patients with severe degrees of brittle diabetes may consider isolated islet transplant or pancreas transplant. While promising, transplantation remains a relatively new therapy and carries significant risks, including those associated with anti-rejection immunosuppressive therapy. Therefore, only people who have exhausted all other means of glucose management should consider transplantation.

Meanhwile, people with psychological problems, such as stress and depression, are at highest risk of experiencing brittle diabetes. In some cases, these psychological problems lead them to neglect self-care for their diabetes. For example, they may stop maintaining a healthy diet or may not manage their blood sugar. As blood sugar control wanes, metabolic imbalances further complicate and often worsen the underlying psychological problems, causing a repetitive cycle of brittle diabetes.

It is wise to find a health care team that specializes in diabetes. Brittle diabetes can be difficult not only for the patients but to the family and the health care team. While this condition most frequently occurs in the age group of 15-30 years old, there have been reports of this condition afflicting the elderly. Their years of experience will be a benefit to those who suffer from the erratic blood sugar readings. Their experience will show the way through all the factors to consider when dealing with brittle diabetes and its treatment.
