Diabetes is a disease in which blood glucose levels are above normal. When you have diabetes, your body either doesn’t make enough insulin or can’t use its own insulin as well as it should. This causes sugar to build up in your blood.

Symptoms of diabetes are: frequent urination, excessive thirst, unexplained weight loss, extreme hunger, sudden vision loss and a feeling of being tired are just a few of the more prominent symptoms.

Diabetes is not one disease, but rather is at least two diseases grouped as type 1 and type 2 diabetes. In actuality, there are many other types of diabetes but the vast majority can be classified into these two types. Type 1 diabetes, which usually presents in children or teens, can present at any age. It is caused by the body destroying the cells in the pancreas that make insulin (the b-cells of the islets) and therefore insulin is required for survival. In type 2diabetes, which affects hispanics, blacks, asians, and american indiansmore frequently, one must have both a resistance to the effects of insulin (so more insulin is required to maintain a normal glucose) and some degree of insulin deficiency.
